[edit]From Indonesian Mataram, ultimately from Sanskrit मातरं (mātaraṃ), the singular accusative noun form of मातृ (mātṛ, “mother”).

[edit]First attested as Mattarm in 1841. Named after a nearby estate, named in turn after the Mataram Sultanate. The estate's owner, Joannes Matthias van Rhijn, had been the Dutch East India Company's resident at Mataram before returning to the United Provinces and purchasing the estate.
