Etymology

[edit]

Possibly ultimately derived from luoda, which could also mean "(of ice) to thaw, (of water) to flood". This could have been the source of a lake name *Luopia, *Luopioinen, after which the town was then named.[1]

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈluo̯pioi̯nen/, [ˈluo̞̯piˌo̞i̯ne̞n]
  • Rhymes: -oinen
  • Hyphenation(key): Luo‧pi‧oi‧nen

Proper noun

[edit]

Luopioinen

  1. A former municipality in Pirkanmaa, Finland; now part of Pälkäne.
  2. A village in the municipality of Pälkäne.

Declension

[edit]

The internal locative cases (inessive, illative and elative) are used with this place name when referring to a location; for example, "in Luopioinen" is Luopioisissa. Note that the inflected forms are formed as if they were plural.
