[edit]Borrowed from Dutch knapzak (older form cnapsack), from Middle Dutch cnappen (“to bite with teeth”), ultimately from knappen (“to eat, crack”), of imitative origin, + Sack. Cognate with Low German knapzak. Compare German Schnappsack.
