[edit]From Middle High German künicriche, from Old High German kuningrīhhi, from Proto-West Germanic *kuningarīkī, from Proto-Germanic *kuningarīkiją. Equivalent to Kenig (“king”) + Reich (“empire”). Cognates include German Königreich, Dutch koninkrijk, Danish kongerige, Old English cyningrice.
