[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Classical Malay كستيل (Kastila, “Castile, of Castile, Castilian, Spaniard”), possibly from either:
- Portuguese Castela (“Castile”) (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
- Arabic قَسَاطِلَة (qasāṭila, “Castilians”), as in Arabic قَشْتَالَة (qaštāla, “Castille”) and بِلَاد الْقَسَاطِلَة (bilād al-qasāṭila, “the country of Castilians”) as per Potet (2013, 2016).
Both ultimately from Latin castella (“little forts, castles”), plural diminutive of castrum (“fort, defensive wall”). Cognate with Maranao Kastila, Maguindanao Kastila, Tausug Kastila', and Cebuano Katsila. Doublet of Kastilya.
