[edit]From a variant of Middle High German karvrītac, from kar (“lamentation; mourning”) + vrītac (“Friday”). kar is from Old High German kara, chara, from Proto-West Germanic *karu, from Proto-Germanic *karō (“lamentation; sorrow; care”). Compare German Karfreitag.
