[edit]The first element kar is from Old High German kara, chara, from Proto-West Germanic *karu, from Proto-Germanic *karō (“lamentation; sorrow; care”). Second element is tag (“day”). See Old High German garotag (“Friday”) as well. This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
