    Folk-etymological adaptation, based on jór (stallion), of Old English Eoforwīċ, itself an alteration of Proto-Brythonic *Eβrọg by false association with eofor (boar) (from Proto-Germanic *eburaz) and wīċ (settlement). Compare Latin Eborācum.
