Luxembourgish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Old High German *enida (attested as enede), northern variant of enita, itself a variant of anut, from Proto-Germanic *anadz. The Luxembourgish form underwent open-syllable lengthening (like Dutch eend, but unlike German Ente); the resulting diphthong ie- was then regularly reshortened before a nasal yielding i-.
