Maltese
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Sicilian Andrìa, from Latin Andreas, from Ancient Greek Ἀνδρέας (Andréas). It being an early borrowing, the initial vowel underwent regular imala. Otherwise one would expect Indrija. It may be conjectured that the -a was deleted in order to avoid the feminine-sounding ending and the stress then shifted to the first syllable according to the stress system of older Maltese.
Pronunciation
[edit]Proper noun
[edit]Indri m
- (also biblical) a male given name from Sicilian [in turn from Latin, in turn from Ancient Greek], equivalent to English Andrew
