Etymology

Described in 2024 by Lomax et al. as a new genus and species. Composed of two words:

• Ichthyotitan: a blending of Ichthyosaurus (a taxonomic genus within the family Ichthyosauridae – large, extinct marine reptiles) + Ancient Greek Τιτάν (Titán, “Titan”).
• severnensis: English Severn Estuary (the location where the specimen was found) + Latin -ēnsis (“of or from a place”, suffix).
