Etymology
[edit]Described in 2024 by Lomax et al. as a new genus and species. Composed of two words:
- Ichthyotitan: a blending of Ichthyosaurus (a taxonomic genus within the family Ichthyosauridae – large, extinct marine reptiles) + Ancient Greek Τιτάν (Titán, “Titan”).
- severnensis: English Severn Estuary (the location where the specimen was found) + Latin -ēnsis (“of or from a place”, suffix).
Proper noun
[edit]- A taxonomic species within the family †Shastasauridae – extinct ichthyosaurs (marine reptile); believed to be the largest ever discovered at an estimated body length of 25 metres (82 ft).
