[edit]From North Levantine Arabic حمص (Ḥumṣ), variant of Arabic حِمْص (Ḥims), ultimately from Ancient Greek Ἔμεσᾰ (Émesa), ultimately from Aramaic חֲמָת (Ḥamāth, “hindrance, frustration, fortress”) + צובָא (Ṣōwḇā, “near, surrounding, station”).
