[edit]First attested as Hoender Lo Struycken in 1748. Compound of hoender (“fowl, gallinaceous bird”) and lo (“light forest on sandy soil”). The toponym was formed as an imitation of Otterlo in a period when lo had ceased to be a productive toponymic element.
