[edit]Borrowed from Serbo-Croatian Херцеговина (Hercegovina), itself from German Herzog (“duke”), with a Slavic adjectival ending -(o)vina, referring to the medieval duchy of Stjepan Vukčić Kosača, who took the title of Herceg (= Herzog, Duke) of Saint Sava in 1419.
