Etymology
[edit]First attested as helmund in 1108. Etymology unknown. Proposed etymologies include a compound of dialectal hel (“low-lying”) and Old Dutch munte (“hill, place of refuge during flooding”) and a compound of the unattested hydronym Hel and mond (“mouth”).
