[edit]First attested as berenbroec in 1381. Compound of a first element that has been variously interpreted as Middle Dutch beer (“manure, mud that looks like manure”), Middle Dutch beer (“boar, male pig”) and Middle Dutch Bere (a personal name) and broek (“marsh, marshland”).
