German
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from English hat trick.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]Hattrick m (strong, genitive Hattricks, plural Hattricks)
- (soccer) a hat trick; a player’s scoring three goals in one match; as distinct from English usage, the goals are often required to be consecutive, i.e. with no other player of either team scoring in between (see below)
Usage notes
[edit]- The term lupenreiner Hattrick (literally “pristine or flawless hat trick”) refers specifically to a hat trick where the three goals are scored consecutively and in one half of the match (such that not even halftime comes in between). There is no consensus about whether a “normal” Hattrick requires the same, or requires at least consecutiveness, or requires three goals regardless of sequence. The last is also called Dreierpack (literally “pack of three”).
- The British concept of a “perfect hat trick” meaning three goals scored with the right foot, left foot and head respectively, is not known in German-speaking Europe.
