Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]- (Gelderland) First attested as harderewich and herderewich in 1231. Etymology uncertain. A compound formed from either herder (“shepherd”) or harde (“solid, hard soil”) and wijk (“settlement, village”) is one possibility. Derivations from a shallow area near the city called Het Harde or Old Dutch Hardheri (a personal name) have also been proposed. Compare Hierden, Heerde and 't Harde. See also Dutch Low Saxon Harderwiek.
- (Noord-Holland) Attested as Harderwijk in 1764. Potentially named after the city.
