[edit]From Middle Persian *Gundēšāpūr, from 𐭥𐭧𐭩𐭠𐭭𐭣𐭩𐭥𐭪𐭱𐭧𐭯𐭥𐭧𐭥𐭩 (why-ʾndywk-šhpwhry /Weh-Andiyōk-Šābuhr/), compound of 𐭥𐭧𐭩 (weh, “better”) + 𐭠𐭭𐭣𐭩𐭥𐭪𐭱 (Andiyōk, “Antioch”) + 𐭱𐭧𐭯𐭥𐭧𐭥𐭩 (Šābuhr, “Shapur”).
