Inherited from Proto-Slavic *gospodь, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *gástipatis, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰóstipotis, a compound of *gʰóstis and *pótis. The meaning is a semantic loan from Hebrew אֲדֹנָי (ădônāy, My Lord); more at Adonai. Related to gospodin.
