From late Middle High German gīze (greed), a back-formation from Middle High German gīzen, gītsen (greedy), from Middle High German gīt (greed), from Old High German *gītisōn, from Proto-West Germanic *gīdisōn.

Cognate with Luxembourgish Gäiz and Old English ġītsian (to desire, long for).
