[edit]Etymology
[edit]Alteration of earlier Géind under influence of German Gegend, both from Middle High German gegende, from gegen + -de (equivalent to Luxembourgish géint + -t); this is an alteration of older gegenōte, from Old High German geginōti, probably after Old French contree, whence also English country. Compare Dutch jegenode.
