[edit]From Middle High German fingerhuot, vingerhuot, equivalent to Finger (“finger”) + Hut (“hood”). Cognate with German Low German Fingerhood (“thimble”), Dutch vingerhoed (“thimble”), Saterland Frisian Fingerhoud (“thimble”), West Frisian fingerhoed (“thimble”).
