[edit]First attested as estvelde in 1334. Compound composed of an uncertain first element and veld (“field”). Interpretations of the first element include Middle Dutch ast (“branch, field maple, Acer campestre”), ast (“oasthouse, drying oven”) and Old Dutch *askiþi- (“ash forest”). Compare Escamp.
