[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Greek mythology, after the golden apple from the Garden of the Hesperides that Eris, the goddess of discord, tossed among Hera, Athena and Aphrodite as a prize of beauty, causing a futile dispute who of them deserves it. Compare Greek μήλον της έριδος (mílon tis éridos).
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]- (idiomatic, rare) apple of discord, something which causes argument, rivalry, or strife
- Synonym: jablko sváru
- 1896, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, Karel Havlíček: snahy a tužby politického probuzení[1], Praha: Jan Leichter, page 490:
- Spory, pokud nebyly osobní, se samého počátku měly své zřídlo v „jablku Eridině“, jak Palacký sám a správně je rozpoznal. Eridino jablko byl poměr ke šlechtě, resp. určování programu demokratického.
- From the very beginning the arguments, unless they were personal, were caused by the "apple of discord" as it was correctly recognized by Palacký himself. The apple of discord was the relashionship to the nobility, or more precisely determining the democratic programme.
