Borrowed from Latin eremita, from Ancient Greek ἐρημίτης (erēmítēs, person of the desert) from ἐρημία (erēmía, desert, solitude), from ἔρημος (érēmos) or ἐρῆμος (erêmos, uninhabited) plus -ίτης (-ítēs, one connected to, a member of).
