German
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Learned borrowing from Latin effectus. Attested since the 15th century, in common use since the 17th.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]Effekt m (strong, genitive Effekts or Effektes, plural Effekte)
- effect
- Synonyms: Wirkung, Auswirkung
Usage notes
[edit]- Wirkung is the more usual and general word. Effekt may suggest notions such as systematic, explainable, intended, positive. For example, Nebenwirkung means “side effect” in general (and especially negative), whereas Nebeneffekt would usually be understood as “additional positive effect”. This is only a tendency, however, and need not hold true in all contexts.
