First attested as Eestergae in 1505. Likely derived from a compound of Old Frisian ees (“farmland next to a village”) or ā (“watercourse, river”) and gâ (“village, village area”). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier variant of the Frisian name. Compare Eestrum.
