Named by Leigh Van Valen after the character Eärendil in Tolkien's legendarium, which is in turn from Quenya eärë (“sea”) + -ndil (“lover”).

1. A taxonomic genus within the family Periptychidae – an extinct condylarth mammal from the Paleocene, synonymized with Mimatuta.
