[edit]Deverbal from drehen, after Low German Dreih m (compare Dutch draai). Chiefly since the 19th century, earlier attestations are isolated. Widely displaced the earlier feminine Drehe. The sense “trick” is from Rotwelsch (thieves’ cant).
