[edit]From dréchen (“dry”) + -t. Extended form of older Drécht, from northern Middle High German drügede (ca. 1450). Cognate with Middle Low German *drugede (Limburgish druugde), Middle Low German drügede. Further related with Dutch droogte, English drought.
