Etymology
[edit]First attested as illip in 1347. Derived from a hydronym, derived in turn from a compound of an unclean first element and Old Dutch *apa (“river, watercourse”). The first element may be a term meaning "yellowish-brown". The first element has also been interpreted as a term cognate to ijlen (“hurry”), but this is unlikely as the watercourse does not move quickly.
