Etymology

[edit]

First attested as daneke and danecke in 1236. Etymology uncertain. A proposed derivation from a compound of Old Dutch Dano (a personal name) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ing- and heem (home, settlement) does not match well with the oldest attestations of the toponym.

See also Limburgish Danike.
