[edit]- The Rhenish and Lower Saxon places are equivalent to Tal (“valley”) + Heim (“home, place”), with unshifted D- from the local Central Franconian and Low German dialects and reduction of the second component to -em.
- The quarter of Berlin is first attested as Dalm (13th c.) and might therefore have a different origin.
