[edit]The name is of uncertain origin:
- Related to the city Cluviae in Carricini, which could be from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kleh₂w- (“hook”) or related to Clusium
- From Proto-Indo-European *ḱlew- (“to hear”), cognate with clueo (“I am called”)
- From cluo (“I cleanse”); if so, related to the river Cluentus
