Etymology

Learned borrowing from Latin chamaeleon (“chamaeleon”), from Ancient Greek χαμαιλέων (khamailéōn). Doublet of chameleon. Named by Dutch explorers Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman between 1595 and 1597.

Usage notes

• The Chamaeleon complex is a large star-forming region of dark nebulae (or dark clouds) which covers most of the constellation Chamaeleon and overlaps several neighbouring constellations. Its main components are the dark clouds Chamaeleon I, Chamaeleon II and Chamaeleon III.
