Armenian building materials

[edit]

@Vahagn Petrosyan Compare Category:ar:Building materials which is fairly comprehensive. What might be the Armenian word for مِلَاط (milāṭ)? (And that Armenian cement might interest you.) Fay Freak (talk) 00:06, 23 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Fay Freak, I have now populated this category with the most basic terms. The word you are interested in is մաղթ (maġtʻ). However, I highly doubt the ultimate origin is Armenian. As far as I know, Commagene's Armenian population was not significant. We should look for a Semitic origin. PS I have not idea what Armenian cement is. --Vahag (talk) 15:50, 29 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Because the population was Aramaic speakers? Which was it? I find it a bit difficult to pinpoint at a region in that area and say which languages where spoken in a specific century, but you are closer. Samosata was founded by the Armenian Samos, however that was in the middle of the 3rd century, and Liddle-Scott-Jones give quotes from the 5th century (the pre-Socratic Hippo and Cratinus). I am going to reword مِلَاط (milāṭ). Maybe @Profes.I. knows some cuneiform forms. Fay Freak (talk) 17:34, 29 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I believe the population was Aramaic-speaking. The kings of Commagene claimed descent from the Armenian Orontid dynasty dynasty, but that does not mean the population spoke Armenian. I am not even sure Orontids spoke Armenian. --Vahag (talk) 17:51, 29 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
