[edit]Compound Brand (“conflagration, arson”) + schatz (“treasure”). Attested in Middle High German as brantschaz.

- the exaction of tribute from a city under the threat of setting fire to it; sum paid by a city in wartime to avoid looting and pillaging (Grimm: exactio tributi sub incendii comminatione)
