[edit]First attested as De Niuwe ofte Bovenste Veen Dijk Sloot in 1723. Derived from boven (“upper”) and a compound of veen (“peat bog, marsh”) and sloot (“ditch”). Named after a nearby ditch. The element boven was added to distinguish the settlement from Beneden Veensloot.
