Etymology

First attested as De Eerste Beneden Veen Dijk Sloot in 1723. Derived from beneden (lower) and a compound of veen (peat bog, marsh) and sloot (ditch). Named after a nearby ditch. The element beneden was added to distinguish the settlement from Boven Veensloot.
