Etymology

First attested as bommersoirt in 1492. Potentially derived from a compound of the hydronym Borre, Middle Dutch moer (bog, marsh) and kous (sock), here referring to a body of water shaped like a sock. The last element was initially oord (land protruding into or bordering water).
