[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle High German bolle, from Old High German bolla, from Proto-Germanic *bullǭ.
The sense “bowl” is inherited in many dialects of Central Franconian and even further east in Hessian Rhine Franconian. Therefore there is no reason to consider it a borrowing from French bol, which is itself a rather late borrowing from English.
