Borrowed from Spanish and New Latin Bolivia (land of Bolivar), from the South American revolutionary leader Simón Bolívar + -ia (forming placenames), from the Spanish surname Bolívar, from Basque Bolibar, a village in Álava, Basque Country, Spain, from Basque bolu (windmill) + ibar (valley).
