Beegden
Appearance
Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Potentially attested as beegedem in 1202, attested with certainty as bekede in 1264. Etymology uncertain. Perhaps related to boog (“bend, riverbend”) with the dative plural form of a collectivising suffix Old Dutch *-iþi. Erroneously interpreted as a compound of an uncertain first element and heem (“home, settlement”). Compare Beugen and Beugt.
