[edit]First attested as balgoie in 1172. Compound derived either from Proto-Germanic *balg- (“swelling, slight elevation”) and Old Dutch ôi (“land next to water”) or Proto-Germanic *balwa- (“bad”) and *ga-agwjô- (“habitation area”).
