  • (Variant readings from manuscripts, in the accusative:) Atanagrum; Adtanagrum; Attanagrum; Attanagium; Atanagium; Atanagiam; Athanagram; Athanagrum.

Etymology

[edit]

Pierre de Marca proposed in the 17th century Athanasiam, from Ancient Greek ἀθάνατος (athánatos).

Proper noun

[edit]

Atanagrum

  1. (Ancient Rome, geography) An ancient city of the ilergetes, of unknown location, probably in modern central Catalonia

Usage notes

[edit]

Mentioned only once, in Livy 21.61.6, where it appears in the accusative, with multiple variants as seen above. Hence some editors chose to emend it to Athanagia, another to Atanagrus, while Atanagrum as the base-form is also an option. It may be the same place as Ilerda.
