Appendix talk:Portuguese Swadesh list
Add topicPronunciation in Brazilian Portuguese
[edit]Brazil is too large a territory, with a too diverse set of pronunciations, for the task of listing the IPA of each word like attempted here.
But the big problem is, the given pronunciations do not correspond to a coherent variant of Brazilian Portuguese. Rather, it is a mix of paulista pronunciations (the post-vocalic [s], which is pronounced [ʃ] in Rio de Janeiro), and carioca pronunciations (the post-vocalic [ʁ], which is pronounced [ɾ] in São Paulo). Then this is compounded by the inconsistent transcriptions of post-vocalic "r", which is sometimes rendered [ʁ], as in "verme", and sometimes [x], as in "flor". The later exists, but is neither carioca (floʁ) nor paulista (floɾ). The same goes for intervocalic "r", which is usually [ʁ] in Rio de Janeiro, rather than [x]. The impression is that what is presented is always a pronunciation that is different from the EP, when this does not correspond to reality. 189.114.62.22 01:03, 4 March 2018 (UTC)
