[edit]From *kùrъ (“cock, rooster”) + *-y. Originally meant “hen”, for semantic development compare French cocotte, poule. Most likely false cognate of Latin cārus (“beloved”), Latvian kārs (“craving, covetous”) and English whore (from Proto-Indo-European *kéh₂ros).
