Etymology

From *kùrъ (cock, rooster) +‎ *-y. Originally meant “hen”, for semantic development compare French cocotte, poule. Most likely false cognate of Latin cārus (beloved), Latvian kārs (craving, covetous) and English whore (from Proto-Indo-European *kéh₂ros).
