Maltese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Arabic ه ن ء (h-n-ʔ).

The outcome of root-initial ه (h) in modern Maltese is irregular; it was either vowelised or merged into /ħ/. Generally one or the other happened throughout a given root, but in the case of h-n-j the irregularity continues even within the root. It is spelt with h because of the rule that ħ can never be silent.

Root

  1. Related to happiness.
