Appendix:Hebrew patterns/קָטוּל

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Hebrew

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From *qatūl-. As a result of being next to the stressed syllable and open, the /a/ in the first one became lengthened. Words of the second and third semantic group are usually rather derived from a strengthened form of *qatul- (by lengthening the second vowel).

Adjective

[edit]

קָטוּל (katúl) (feminine קְטוּלה, masculine plural קְטוּלים, feminine plural קְטוּלות)

Used for forming:

  1. Passive participles.
    כָּתוּב (written) בּתוּלָה (virgin)
    Synonym: קָטִיל
  2. Stative adjectives, rarely transitive.
    עָצוּם (strong) אָנוּשׁ (incurable)
  3. Active substantives.
    יָקוּשׁ (fowler)
